Exploring Amsterdam

After checking in we began figuring out the city.  The streets are confusing, so it was good to have a map.  We went to a few shops and stopped in a cafe for a drink.  Then we headed to the Anne Frank House.  I have always been interested in her story, so seeing the Secret Annex and the actual diary was so moving.  I'm reading her diary right now as a refresher and it means even more now.

The first night we walked around stopping in cafes for a drink and to get warm, then wandering off to the next stop.

We went on an eye-opening stroll down the canal through the Red Light District. Apparently the girls rent their space each night, then post up at the window trying to entice the guys for a visit in their lingerie. Unbelievable. Also unbelievable was the pot and pot souvenirs everywhere. It's certainly the opposite of the Bible Belt!

We accidentaly found the Palace and the National Monument in Dam Square. We kept trying to get to certain places and always getting turned back around somehow and ending at Dam Square again. "There's that Dam Square again!" We knew we'd never get really lost because no matter which way we went, we always seemed to end up there again!

We had a blast the first night just walking around.  We were so entertained we didn't realize how late it was until around 1am.  Shortly after we headed back to our hostel...
